Product Description |
At The Plaza is a pictorial record and an anecdotal history of the world's most famous hotel: New York's Plaza. As a story, it traverses the breadth and scope of Gotham's high society during the American Century. As a photo collection, it's like no other, capturing the hotel's remarkable presence on the ever-changing New York scene.
For almost one hundred years, The Plaza has mirrored the social history of Manhattan: its tastes in design, entertainment, restaurants and accommodations, as well as its adjustment to Prohibition, the Great Depression, two World Wars, the Cold War, women's rights, smokers' rights, animals' rights and British rock-and-roll. The first guests to sign the register-Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt-set the standard for the long procession of luminaries that followed: Mark Twain, Diamond Jim Brady, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the Beatles, among many others.
In At The Plaza, the hotel's official historian has compiled a tremendous collection of photographs and vignettes chronicling the colorful history of a building, an institution, and a city.

THE PLAZA=DELUXE
|
| Review Date: August 9, 2001 |
| Reviewer: MOVIE MAVEN, New York, NY USA |
| When someone mentions The Plaza what do you first think of? Luxury? Eloise? Donald and Ivana? Dietrich or Garbo or F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald in residence? The Pulitzer Fountain? The final scene from "The Way We Were?" All of them and many, many more are here in this deluxe book about this deluxe hotel. Chock full of blueprints, wonderful photographs and reproductions of menus and paintings and postcards, this book is not just a history of a hotel...it is, truly, a history of New York City which is host to the hotel. You will learn how specific rooms (The Palm Court, The Edwardian Room, The Oak Room, etc.) were "born", how, when and why celebrities like Frank Lloyd Wright lived at the hotel, how various suites came to be decorated by and named after people like Cecil Beaton, what the scandal was caused by Mrs. Patrick Campbell, how the Duke and Duchess of Windsor celebrated their anniversary here and how Patricia Kennedy and Peter Lawford celebrated their marriage here. There are revealing photographs of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis with her husband and son avoiding the paparazzi, John and Yoko enjoying an obviously romantic lunch, Truman Capote's Black and White party and so many of the entertainers who performed at the famous Persian Room: Shirley Bassey, Ethel Merman, The Mills Brothers, Kay Thompson (mother to Eloise), Eartha Kitt, Bob Hope, Liberace, Diahann Carroll, etc. There is even an entire chapter on the many movies that were filmed at the hotel, beginning with Hitchcock's masterpiece, "North By Northwest." All of Gathje's research is well documented and written in a fascinating style: charming, inviting, intimate, warm, classy and yet filled with good humor. RECOMMENDED. |

At the Plaza: An Illustrated History of the World's Most Famous Hotel

| Review Date: March 4, 2009 |
| Reviewer: LuAnn Zettle, Michigan |
| I confess, I purchased this book for my mother but when I skimmed through it I couldn't part with it too soon. The pictures are high quality, many you'll never see elsewhere and the stories will keep you turning the pages with a smile. Eventually this unique book made it to my mother, who @ 84 recalled many of the headline moments associated with this beautiful New York landmark. |

| The Hotel Book: Great Escapes Asia |
| |
 |
|
| |
Product Description |
| Find your inner Zen Much more than a travel or holiday guide, Great Escapes Asia is first and foremost a paradisiacal photo album. Featuring opulent photographs of places that seem too perfect to be real, some of which look like James Bond movie sets or National Geographic subjects, this book will quickly convince you that an Asian sojourn is crucial to your mental and physical wellbeing. The icing on the cake is that not only do these hotels really exist, but—thanks to the pricing and contact information provided—you can succumb to their mysterious charms and book yourself a room (or houseboat, hut, or tree house, whatever the case may be). Among the gems waiting for you in Great Escapes Asia: • In Kerala, India, choose between luxurious tree houses suspended 25 meters off the ground or futuristic-looking, Star Wars-style houseboats made of bamboo poles, palm leaves, and coconut fibers • Are you more the resplendent-resort or budget-bungalow type? Find the best of both in Bali • The best place for a delectable cup of joe: a luxury lodge and spa on a java plantation in (you guessed it) Java • In the Philippines, an organic resort composed of superimposed huts whose every room affords instant access to the beach via rope ladder • Tadao Ando’s sprawling minimalist concrete-and-steel hotel attached to the contemporary art museum in Naoshima, Japan—the perfect place to contemplate on the relationship between humans and nature • An exclusive hotel on a private island in Sri Lanka, once owned by Paul Bowles and frequented by Arthur C. Clarke and Peggy Guggenheim • Thatched-roof cottages in India whose gardens overflow with mangos, nutmeg, and cardamom • An Ayurvedic spa in the Himalayas where nothing matters but peace and relaxation • In Myanmar, an elegant river cruise boat and a hotel on a breathtaking archeological site • Chairman Mao’s former getaway in Beijing, where you can rent his lavish, traditionally-decorated suite complete with adjoining concubine rooms Countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam |

Best Book I've Never Looked at Ever
|
| Review Date: May 1, 2005 |
| Reviewer: Mary Jane, |
| If this book is anything like it's African counterpart, then I approve! It doesn't take a genious to guess what's in this book. And I'm guessing it's good. So good, in fact, that I'm going to put it next to my African book on my coffee table, which is a huge deal. Nothing else has ever had the priveledge of parking itself next to that glorious, godly, tree-made piece of wonderful splendor. I'm licking my fingers just thinking about it. Those pages won't stick for me! I only hope that you have a credit card and can order things from Amazon. Because everything they sell is worth it. Thank you for reading this. But seriously, go to Asia. Eat Bamboo, no Pandas! |
Very good book- great pictures
|
| Review Date: April 1, 2005 |
| Reviewer: A reader, Chandler, AZ |
| There are a number of books out there profiling the most luxurious hotels in Asia- this is one of my favorites. The book covers a good variety of hotels in Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, China, India, Myanmar and a couple other countries. Well-known hotels like Amankila, Amanpulo, and Amanjiwo are profiled, but lesser known hotels make up the majority that are featured. The pictures are largely crisp and clear, something that can't be said for some other comparable books. Like other Taschen books, this book employs the multi-language formula where all editorial is written in several different languages. Some might find this annoying. Not a lot is written about the hotels either. Overall, a good effort. |

Product Description |
American Lola Laforet was swept away in a whirlwind wedding and found herself the chef/owner of the Hotel Riviera. Her life seemed to be a dream come true. But then her husband disappeared one day with nothing more than a wave goodbye. Six months later, Jack Ferrar, an American ex-pat living on his boat, drops anchor in Lola's harbor and teaches her the true meaning of attraction. When various shady people--all claiming ownership of the Hotel Riviera--and the police appear, Lola and Jack have to track down the mysterious Patrick. And along the way, they fall in love. With great food, wonderful sensuality, and lush scenery, Elizabeth Adler holds you under her spell and transports you to one of the most romantic places on earth.

Characters and settings that enchant!
|
| Review Date: September 18, 2003 |
| Reviewer: S. Gould, Woodmere, NY United States |
| Elizabeth Adler has once again created a story that vividly transports its reader to an exotic site allowing one to believe they've actually visited. "The Hotel Riviera", an aging eight room villa, sits nestled on a sandy beach near Saint Tropez. Its proprietor and chef, Lola Laforet, quietly caters to the needs of her small but adoring group of guests while her personal life unravels. Her husband, Patrick, has gone missing and the police suspect her of offing him. Several unscrupulous people have approached her claiming to be owed large sums from her missing husband and seeking ownership of her beloved Hotel Riviera. Just when she thinks things can be no worse help comes in the form of an enigmatic but handsome drifter and sailor who has dropped anchor in her bay. Jack Farrar seems too good to be true but he is always there when Lola needs him, and along with her assorted guests they tackle the problem of finding Patrick and saving the Hotel Riviera. Adler skillfully develops her plot and characters, slowly revealing small histories and traits until you find you have grown thoroughly attached and entirely too fond of them. It is almost as if you are leaving friends when the story has ended, but the trip is truly worthwhile. |
A Lot of Vacation for Your Buck
|
| Review Date: March 9, 2004 |
| Reviewer: Mamalinde, Dallas |
| Where else but in the wonderful world of books can you escape the wintry world and stay in an intimate hotel on the coast of France, where the sun shines and the moon glows over the cove? The guests might arrive by dinghy, or motorcycle or more conventional transportation. Lola, transplanted American hostess welcomes her guests and treats them to culinary wonders each evening on the terrace over looking the shimmering sea. But all is not well at the Hotel Riveria, Lola's husband Patrick having disappeared without a trace and the police (who were initially reluctant to investigate the missing husband) are now eyeing Lola suspiciously. Add to this a Queenly British guest, a naked man from an anchored sloop, a greedy millionaire on an enormous yacht, and a sleek and sexy "childhood friend" of the missing husband - as well as a couple of loving pets and the formula moves from languid vacation to international intrigue. A delightful escape/fairy tale and an author who knows how to bring a beautiful painting to life. |
Revel in the Sensual Pleasures of the Riviera
|
| Review Date: November 5, 2003 |
| Reviewer: Antoinette Klein, Hoover, Alabama USA |
| Elizabeth Adler has penned one of her warmest and most sensual novels and set it in the exquisite south of France. Lola Laforet, the endearing heroine, has been desserted by her handsome husband and left as the gourmet chef of a quaint Riviera auberge they had owned. Things become increasingly intense when police suspect Lola of her husband's murder, a handsome American ex-patriate docks his boat in her harbor, and a very Miss Marple-like guest takes a motherly interest in Lola. If you like your wine cool and your men hot, you will thorougly enjoy this romp through a maze of ex-lovers, people with secret agendas, and endearing pets who settle comfortably into your heart. Beyond all the romance and intrigue we have come to expect from Elizabeth Adler, it is the utterly delicious descriptions of the food that will delight the reader. Mouth-watering recipes will leave you wishing for your own romantic getaway to the Riviera. But beware, once you meet the delightful characters in this one, you will be sad to say au revoir. |
